Transformative family engagement creates true partnerships between families, schools, teachers, early learning programs, and providers. In Oregon, current family engagement efforts fall into three broad domains: 1) Engaging families in supporting children's learning at home; 2) Engaging families as partners with providers, teachers, and schools; and 3) Engaging families in program, school and community leadership, decision-making, and advocacy. Although early indicators relating to the family engagement work being done by communities across Oregon are promissin, The central recommendation of this report is to continue strengthening family engagement work that focuses on reducing disparities for Oregon's most vulnearble children. The data continues to show dispartieies in school readiness for children of color and for children from economically disadvantaged families.

K-12 Student Success: Family Engagement

The K-12 Student Success: Out-of-School Time Initiative is focused on boosting student success among Oregon's middle school students. The Oregon Community Foundation and The Ford Family Foundation are currently funding 21 organizations that provide out-of-school-time (OST) programming (e.g., after school or summer) to rural students, students of color and low-income students. Funded programs emphasize academic support, positive adult role models and family engagement. This learning brief summarizes what is known about the importance of family engagement from existing research and shares what we are learning about the efforts of the Initiative grantees to engage and support families. We hope that this description of the work of the Initiative grantees helps build understanding of the practices and experiences of OST programs in Oregon.

Oregon Parenting Education Collaborative: Helping Parents Raise Children Who Thrive

This report summarizes the work of the Oregon Parenting Education Collaborative during its first five years, 2010-2015. OPEC is a multi-year initiative led by The Oregon Community Foundation, The Ford Family Foundation and Oregon State University. Financial supporters include The Oregon Community Foundation, The Ford Family Foundation, the Meyer Memorial Trust, The Collins Foundation, and OCF Donor Advised Funds. The initiative supports expanded access to best practice parenting education programs, with a focus on reaching parents of children prenatal to age six, and supports efforts to develop and strengthen regional parenting education "Hubs." OPEC is unique in its collaborative, foundation-led approach to building a statewide infrastructure for parenting education through community-based non-profits and public agencies. The OPEC initiative was launched in July 2010 with the funding of six regional parenting Hubs serving 12 counties, and nine Small Grant projects providing evidence-based classes and/or home visiting for specific groups of parents. As of fall 2015, 15 Hubs reach 26 Oregon counties and Siskiyou County, Calif., and OPEC has provided Small Grant funding to 17 additional Oregon organizations. OPEC has achieved strong outcomes in the building of regional infrastructure and parenting education partnerships, as well as increasing positive parenting capacities.

Stand Up for Our Children Year Two Evaluation, Executive Summary

Stand Up For Our Children is a W.K. Kellogg Foundation-funded initiative to foster civic participation to empower our parents/families to improve the quality of life for our region's most vulnerable children and to increase the organizational capacity of nonprofits funded. The initiative's Year One evaluation sought to learn about changes in participants' awareness, knowledge and acquisition of skills. The Year Two evaluation looked at how participants began to apply these knowledge and skills and take action as individuals, organizations and networks. This evaluation considered the Stand Up initiative's activities and impact from September 2013 to August 2014.

Supporting Our Region's Veterans: Assessing the Network of Services Available for Post 9/11 Veterans and Their Families in Northern Virginia

Just across the river from our nation's capital, NOVA is home to countless icons representing the history of warfare in the United States and the sacrifices that have been made for our freedoms. From Arlington National Cemetery, to the Marine Corps War Memorial, to the United States Air Force Memorial, to the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, to the Pentagon itself, these landmarks draw millions of visitors each year and provide places for Americans to publicly mourn, celebrate, and remember our service men and women. Less public, however, are the thousands of veterans and their families living in NOVA and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area who are restarting their civilian lives after serving multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS), NOVA is home more 35,000 that have served since 2001. Indeed, Virginia has the highest Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF) veteran ratio of all 50 states.Dozens of local organizations have risen to the challenge of supporting NOVA's post-9/11 veterans. These organizations deliver a range of interventions from financial counseling, to job training, to mental health services. It is clear that a wide array of support is available. What is less clear is exactly what those needs are and how local organizations are working collectively to address them. In an effort to better understand this landscape, the Community Foundation -- in partnership with the United Way of the National Capital Area and with the support of Deloitte -- developed this report to gain a more in-depth understanding of NOVA's veteran support landscape. This report is intended to provide the Community Foundation and other local community-based organizations with the insights needed to strategically target and coordinate grant dollars toward the greatest needs
